Fleet 40 Training/Coaching/Development

The SSA 505 fleet (a.k.a American Section Fleet 40 as per Tyler's post) is putting together a training/coaching program.

We've asked the SSA 505ers for their goals, put them all together and summarized them, looked at what was common, and are working on a program to address those goals.

The schedule is basically as follows:

March: Saturdays weather permitting/as scheduled.
April: We're working on a schedule that works around the local regatta schedule and includes training/coaching on SSA regatta dates
May onwards: Thursday evenings

More to come on the schedule...

But the first scheduled event is Saturday March 18th. Since just about everyone wanted to better understand rig/control calibration, we will start with that.

I would like to know who plans to participate; please let me know. Start time is tbd/what the consensus wants, but I would suggest a 9:00AM start time. Let me know if that works for you.

Bring your boat, your partner, and a new or nearly new North jib if you have one (The North jibs have the trim line we use to calibrate jib lead fore and aft position.. you can use this calibration even if you don't have a North jib.. but we need to use a North jib to do the calibration).

Proposed Schedule:

9:00-10:00 we calibrate on boat completely, as a group
10:00-11:00 you calibrate your boat based on what you saw, with support from me.
11:00 on... those who are done should go sailing, I expect there will be some calibration issues to deal with so I expect to be working through those for awhile longer.

Resources: See the calibration instructions and the matrix on the web.

I'll be sending out further e-mails with a more detailed schedule and we we expect to focus on for each scheduled day( or evening). For some of these days we plan to use a coach and powerboat, perhaps video, and there will most likely be a cost associated with that day (for some reason some coaches like to be paid :-)

We have a plan -- calibration -- for March 18th. We need to figure out what we are doing the following weekend, March 25th. Macy is organizing a practice session at WRSC that weekend.

The best thing for us to do may be to NOT schedule anything at SSA and participate with Macy/Dustin, Drew/Ramsey at WRSC.

The following e-mail was sent out to coaches, anyone who I thought could coach, and just about anyone who might be able to think of an appropriate coach.

The Severn Sailing Association 505 Fleet is Looking for coaches to work with us for some training sessions. Sessions would be some weekend dates (typically one day on a weekend) in March, April and May, and Thursday evenings after daylight savings comes into effect.

We have a list of objectives to work on (eg. calibrate boats so we can exchange tuning information, improve downwind wire running speed, faster wire running gybes, faster wire to wire tacks, improve upwind VMG in light, medium and heavy, etc.) and can work on some of them ourselves, or by using in-fleet resources, but would like to work with coaches for some of the other objectives. Our thought is to focus on just a few (perhaps just one) objective during each training session, but we are open to suggestions. Some of the objectives may be best accomplished with the aid of photography or video.

So we are looking for coach recommendations. It does not have to be the same person for each of our scheduled events; actually some different perspectives would be useful. Please let me know if you might be interested in working with us for one or more sessions. And if you know someone else who you think might be interested please give me their contact information, and feel free to forward this e-mail to them. Some suggestion as to what a day or evening of coaching would cost us would be useful to us.

Thanks very much,

Ali

I think it looks good.

I would be sure to include the word document which we created before in any solicitation because it includes the details of the fleet members' goals.

What the Brits are up to with training:

Training, Hayling Island, 11/12 March 2006
Charlie Walters reports:

Paul Brotherton led a full-on weekend's training for the 505 fleet, leaving each crew with two challenges; things to develop and areas to focus on for development. Across the various exercises, this weekend was effectively a "health check" of each crew's performance around the race track. What was especially positive was that successes came from practically every boat in the fleet (as well as the not-so successful bits)! Whether not entering tacks properly; not communicating in the boat well enough; not setting up the rig effectively; or just choosing poor tactical options on the race track, this was training at its best; the simple stuff - simply delivered. Gaps identified - no BS..

Of course, all the attendees wish to thank Paul for an excellent weekend's training.
